The Study of J.S. Bach on the Piano: Important Factors and Methodology (For IMUS Student)
This half-day workshop will explore the study of different levels of J.S. Bach from start to finish.
Participants may watch and listen or bring sample pieces that will serve as examples for study and discussion. The session is open to all piano teachers and college-age piano students and will draw on concepts introduced in Dr. Wang’s website fugalze.com.
Sylvia Wang’s Biography
Syvia Wang is an internationally renowned pianist who has performed solo and collaboratively across multiple continents including North America, Europe, Asia, Central America, Australia, and Argentina. Some of her notable venues including Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, Teatro Nacional in Costa Rica, and Chicago’s Symphony Center. She has recorded extensively, producing works ranging from Copland’s piano trios to Debussy’s piano compositions for various prestigious labels. Sylvia has achieved recognition in numerous competitions such as the Royal Overseas League Music Festival in London and the J.S. Bach International Piano Competition in Washington, D.C. In addition to performing, Sylvia has had a distinguished academic and pedagogical career, serving as an adjudicator and presenter at major institutions worldwide, including the Central Conservatory in Beijing and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. She has authored an e-book titled “Memorization and the Pianist” and developed fugaleze.com, and educational platform for studying J.S. Bach’s works. Sylvia began her music education at the Royal Academy of Music in London, funded by an Associated Board scholarship, and continued her studies at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, where she earned her M.M. and D.M.A. She frequently travels to Asia for teaching and performance engagements and has designed animal-themed concerts for children across Southeast Asia. Her contributions to music have been recognized with an honorary Associateship from the Royal Academy of Music.
